RE: any campgrounds near Matthews NC?

Charlotte isn't "outdoor" friendly at all, one of the reasons we moved away from there. And, IMHO, Cane Creek is a dump! We quit staying there years ago, although it was less than 30 minutes from where we lived. Loud, rowdy, electric goes off at odd times for no reason, seasonal sites that aren't well kept up, the list goes on and on. Union County does a poor job of running the park. Use the campground at Carowinds, it would be much better, or Andrew Jackson State Park. Either of them are within a reasonable distance and are much nicer than Cane Creek.

RE: RV Park close to Greenville, SC

But you can't stay at Paris Mountain for three months, only 14 days.

RE: RV Park close to Greenville, SC

I don't know anything about it, but there is an RV park called Rainbow RV Park on Rutherford Road in Taylors (just outside the Greenville City limits); I don't know of any "adult-only" parks around here (I live in the Greenville area) but then I don't stay at private parks either.

RE: Any problems with XP service pack 3?

I have a Toshiba Satellite running XP Home and have had no issues, installed it when it first became available. I also have it on my desktop that runs XP Pro and connects to a VPN for eight hours every day while I am working, no problems there either.

RE: America's Scenic Highways and Byways

I ordered mine when the OP first posted too and got mine yesterday. It is great. Already found a couple of real gems close to home here in SC; one right near one of our favorite state parks at that!

RE: Shortcut route 19 in West Virginia

It is a four-lane "superhighway" with a speed limit of 65 MPH. There are stoplights, but mostly just around the larger towns. It is a great road, mountainous/hilly, well of course, as the above poster said, it is WV after all! But it no worse than any of the interstates in the state. This road was built pretty much to interstate standards.

RE: Blankies - Compact but Warm

Vellux (a velvety soft synthetic) or fleece would be the way to go. Fleece blankets also come in different weights/thickness though even the thickest isn't very bulky. A good cotton thermal blanket will a heavy fleece blanket (K-Mart has really nice ones of both kinds) is also very warm. The thermal helps trap your body heat, the fleece keeps it in even more, but both of them are breathable. Actually a quilt done right can be warm in those temps, you might need two, but even two folded up would be less bulk than a large comforter. Have you thought of rolling the comforters up like sleeping bags? They would compact a lot more and rolling large soft goods can actually take up less space than folding them.

RE: the pocket campground in north ga.

I too live in Dalton and would interested in knowing if you can take an RV to The Pocket? We go there about once a year to hike at Keown Falls and play in the cold water at the Springs, but have never really paid much attention to the Campground. I'm thinking there is a Ranger's residence at the entrance, but would be a bit nervous about the isolation of the campground and safety. I'm thinking there are tent pads and back-in sites, but I don't recall hookups, transfer station, or showers in the bathrooms. This would be an awesome place to enhance into a more usable campground. I'll keep checking this link for more input! Happy Camping! Why would you be concerned about safety? It isn't necessarily safer just because there are more people around or you are crammed in like sardines somewhere! There is no need for hookups, dump station (transfer station as you call it) or showers. There are plenty of us that camp (not RV) just fine without all that stuff.

RE: Avoid Front Royal, VA!

Avoid a whole entire city (not to mention all the beautiful surroundings outside that city, which you obviously missed!) just because a PRIVATE landowner doesn't want YOU parking on HIS property? I think you need to rethink your position.

Ours is named "TentHouse Sweet." In case you couldn't guess, it is a popup!

RE: Do you lock your doors when you leave your rv when at a park

Well, this member of the pup crowd is chiming in. No lock on the door, so no; I don't lock it. Never felt the need to do so either. I do put valuables like the camera, laptop if I take it, and a couple other electronic goodies in the van if we are going to be away from our campsite for some reason. Oh and we camp exclusively in state and county parks; we feel there is less "riff-raff," as someone put it, in the state parks than in the private "RV" parks.

RE: Dead Ipod

Ipods are notorious for not being reliable; just look how many are avialable for parts on Ebay because something broke. Both my daughters have had them, and they won't be buying new ones; both broke in one form or another after two years of use. For the money, they should last much longer. There are many other reliable brands out there that cost much less money and don't even get me started on the media file types (proprietary of course) and trying to work with Ipods and ITunes!!!!!

RE: Anyone take their Grandkids with you

Push for full custody. NOT guardianship. The parent can approach the court as often as they want to and get the child back. If possible request TPR and do a full out adoption. If you are drawing your social security and/or are disabled the children will draw off hers and your social security. Get all the state funding medical coverage you can. But be aware that when in another state you may have trouble in an emergency...they may not accept it. If a new parent is disabled and/or retired the child is eligible for a subsidy from social security. If you don't need it put it away for future emergencies, ie medical on trips, pay for college, pay for the first car...etc....Don't put all of it in the child's bank account. If it builds up too much and is trackable the money stops...and the medical goes away. Cheryl You missed my point, I am talking about a functional parent who has full custody of his/her children due to divorce or death of spouse. If something happens to the custodial parent (death or incapacity to care for the children in some way (even temporarially in some cases), the state can and will, in most cases, allow the noncustodial parent and/or the other set of grandparents to petition the court for custody of the children' not to mention they may place the children in foster care until the "custodial" grandparents petition the court for custody. Having a LEGAL will set up by an attorney who specializes in family law setting up guardianship for the children in the event that (God forbid!) the custodial parent dies, will usually prevent the state from sticking their noses into things.

RE: Anyone take their Grandkids with you

For those of you out there who had grandchildren that are still in the custody of our son/daughter, sole custody where the other parent has lost parental rights, PLEASE have them make a legal will through an attorney setting up guardianship for their children now before something happens. It can save a lot of money and headaches and heartaches in the future. As for homeschooling (which I am not against), it would be great if these children were younger, but one is almost ready to graduate high school. I don't think starting to homeschool on the road right now is a good idea. You might want to revisit it later after the oldest graduates, but I think that at both their ages, it would just be too much of a change for them. They have already been through a lot.

RE: smoke smell

Ozium spray, it is an ionized spray and is MUCH cheaper than renting an ozone generator. Avaialable at most stores, usually in the auto department.

RE: Shooting at Terribles Lakeside

Nope, not just Walmart and rest areas, but a lot of campgrounds that have "permanent" residents. Not the type of place I would stay in anyway. If they allow folks to live there permanently or even long-term, it is no longer a campground but a trailer park.

RE: GAS SHORTAGE

Well, we are running out in the Greenville, SC area as of today. Many stations completely out and many more with only one grade.

No, I don't worship at the "Church of Oprah" Not to mention, I work at home, and she is on while I am working (I wouldn't watch her even if I could, though).
